Faculty & Staff Services
There are two types of telephone equipment available for faculty and staff. The first type is Analog equipment which is a basic single line telephone set. The second type is a multi-button multi-line Digital telephone set. The digital telephone has more features built into the phone. Click here for an Analog Reference Guide. The University uses the State of Missouri long distance network as all state agencies are required to do. The state utilizes a variety of long distance carriers which is bid on a year to year basis. Departmental/Unit supervisors determine which telephones have long distance capability.
Personal Call Reimbursement
Generally, the use of University telephone service is intended for official business. However, if personal long distance telephone calls are made with supervisor approval, the minutes are to be reimbursed to the University on a monthly basis by paying at the Cashier's Office and receipts should be kept at the department for auditing purposes.
The University telephone system provides a number of standard features. Special features and multi-button sets allow for additional features to be programmed for optimum use of the telephone.
Standard features are available to all faculty/staff and may be accessed from most campus phones. In some cases, multi-line digital telephone sets will have preprogrammed buttons which produce the same results.
Hold - Puts the caller on hold
Call Forwarding - Routes calls to a
designated extension number
Send All Calls - Directly routes
calls to your regular point of coverage
Transfer - Transfer a call to
another extension within the University
Call Pick Up - If a telephone is
preprogrammed in your pick up group, you can answer other ringing phones. Press
The university provides voice mail, Intuity Audix, to all departments. This service is available to faculty/staff upon request. Long distance rates are billed based
on the time of day the call was placed.
When a department or unit needs one of the communication services we provide, we request that a Telecom work order request form be sent to Telecommunications describing your need. We will create a work order and get to you as soon as possible. Each service has a corresponding charge, so please include your billing information on the memo. Calling cards are available for faculty & staff with appropriate supervisor approval. The state of Missouri bids out this service and the vender changes on a yearly basis. All calls that are made using the calling card will be billed back to the department account. Cards may be requested by sending a memo to the Telecommunications Office in the General Services I Building, MS 7780.
If a card is lost or stolen, please report it immediately to the Telecommunications Office at ext. 2575. Upon leaving the University, the card must be returned to the Telecommunications Office.
Cellular telephone service is available for faculty & staff with appropriate Budget Custodian approval. The State of Missouri Office of Administration bids out this service, therefore, the vender changes on a periodic basis. Departments must go through Telecommunications to arrange and activate this service for university use. Please contact the Telecommunications office at ext. 2575 for current plans and pricing.
The department is billed a monthly service charge plus air time, long distance charges if applicable, and roaming fees. If cellular service is needed for a short period of time, a cell phone can be rented by the day or month. These charges will appear on your departmental regular monthly bill. Cellular service may be requested by sending a memo to the Telecommunications Office at MS 7780 or by email to Telecom@semo.edu.
Discounts on personal cellular plans are available from certain carriers. Contact the Telecommunications office at ext. 2575 for more information.

Reimbursements should be made at the Cashier's Office and receipts should be kept at the department for auditing purposes.
Conference calls can be placed by an individual department by either using a speaker phone or requesting conference equipment from Telecommunications. Conference calls for groups of 5 or less (including the person making the call) can be placed from a digital line and groups of 3 or less (including the person making the call) from a analog line. For larger groups an outside vendor for conference calling must be used. If you are making or receiving a conference call with a group of people on campus involved, you may want to lease the teleconference equipment for a $10 rental fee. Please contact Telecommunications at least 1 day in advance if any of these services are needed at extension 2575.
The Telecommunications Department has installed its own paging system. The paging system will accept alpha or numeric messages. Pagers must be purchased from Telecommunications. There is a small monthly fee and several types of software are available for sending pages.
This system will reach approximately 10 to 20 miles depending on the terrain. Faculty/staff who are interested in paging service should contact Telecommunications at extension 2575. If pagers are needed for a short time period, they can be rented by the day or month.
During an emergency, you are to dial "911" which is routed to our University Department of Public Safety which is a Commissioned Police Agency. DPS is open 24-7 hours per day.
If you receive harassing or threatening telephone calls, please call 911, University Department of Public Safety. Telecommunications works very closely with DPS in tracking down these type of calls.
Faculty/staff are billed monthly through the university internal charge system. Charges are automatically deducted from your departmental account. A detailed summary of all long distance calls is sent separately to departments by the Accounting office.

Local area network (LAN) connections are available to Faculty/staff. A written request needs to come to Telecommunications so that a work order can be generated. Payment for LAN connections will either be through the Information Technology Committee or through the department.
Once a LAN jack has been wired, Networking & PC Maintenance needs to insert an adapter card in the PC and load software. This process in on an arranged basis. There are minimum PC requirements for LAN connection.

The University Printing and Duplicating Service produces a telephone directory which normally comes out in October during the fall semester. Copies of this directory are made available to departments.
Telecommunications will install closed circuit cameras at the written request of departments. These cameras will be monitored at the University Department of Public Safety. Costs vary depending on the application. Please call Telecommunications at ext. 2575 if you have questions.
Any department wanting 1-800 inbound service must call Telecommunications. The State of Missouri bids out this service on a periodic basis and we are required to use the state contract. The department is charged per minute for each call and will receive an internal monthly billing.
FAX machines are located in the Parker Hall Copy Center and Information Technology in Academic Hall. For outbound Faxes the charge is $2 for the use of the machine plus the cost of the long distance call. For inbound Faxes the charge is $ .25 cents per page. These charges will be put on your department account and billed monthly. If you have questions concerning this service, please call Telecommunications at ext. 2575.
Southeast Missouri State University adheres to the nationwide TIA/EIA telecommunication wiring standards and codes. In order to maintain these standards, ensure safety issues and prevent damage to university facilities, the Telecommunications Department is the only authorized unit to perform telephone, local area network (LAN), fiber optic, and cable TV wiring.
