The teachers of Heart of
Missouri RPDC have a grant opportunity to
earn ESOL endorsement, tuition free, through a
grant written by Southeast Missouri State
University. The TAPEMM grant provides 21 hours
of graduate level credit which can be applied,
for those who qualified, towards earning a
MATESOL.
The purpose of the grant is
to train main stream classroom teachers in
strategies and techniques that increase student
performance of the ever increasing ELL
population in Mid-Missouri. While the actual
ELL count differs significantly through out the
region the need to have teachers trained to help
accommodate this growing population is
essential. It is a reality that the number of
ELL's will only increase and may well comprise
over 50 per-cent of the public school age
population within the career span of many
current teachers. When teachers are trained and
given support to work with this population the
academic performance and test scores of ELL’s
increases and school and teacher stress and
frustration decreases.
Ideally we would like to
have a group of 10 or more teachers form a
cohort and take the first 9 hours, on a local
site with an adjunct professor traveling to the
designated location. The remainder of the
courses can be taken on line or via ITV, with
the exception of the Practicum, which is a
blended course taken on site and on line.
