SEXUAL ASSAULT

Definition:

Sexual Assault is a term to describe any sexual act without consent.  Missouri Law divides these acts up into separate offenses, ranging from Forcible Rape to 3rd Degree Sexual Misconduct.

On a college campus, the majority of sexual assaults include alcohol.  It's important to remember that an intoxicated person may not give consent.

Statistics:

  • 90% of sexual assaults are committed by 4% of men, indicating that most men are good men who wouldn't and do not hurt women.  Unfortunately the few who do, average 6 assaults a piece throughout their "career."

  • 1 in 5 college women report being assaulted during their college career.

  • In a national study, 3% of college women reported being sexually assaulted during one school year.  Adding in the summer, this number jumped to 5%.  On Southeast's campus, this would equal 200 women each year.

  • 9% of women at Southeast Missouri State University reported that they had been taken advantage of sexually while under the influence of alcohol.
