FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL ART SYMPOSIUM TO OPEN FEB. 2

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 17, 2003 - The 25th Annual High School Art Symposium entitled "Exhibiting Excellence" will open with a reception at 1 p.m. Feb. 2 in the Southeast Missouri State University Museum.

The best, recent artwork created by 10th, 11th and 12th grade promising young artists from area high schools will be selected for the museum gallery exhibit during February. Art teachers from high schools in Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois and St. Louis may enter up to 50 pieces of their students' artwork and deliver it to the University to compete for inclusion in the exhibit and awards. Entries must be received by Jan. 24.

Robert Boyer, a sculptor and high school art teacher from Festus, Mo., who teaches in the Northwest R-1 School District, will serve as the juror. He will select works and award first-, second- and third place prizes in seven categories: ceramics, drawing, fibers, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. A "Best of Show" award also will be presented. Last year, students submitted more than 800 works for consideration.

Boyer earned a master's degree in art in 1976 from Southeast Missouri State University, where he completed a thesis on sculpture. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri.

The public is invited to the reception to meet and applaud these aspiring young artists. The exhibit will remain on display through Feb. 23.
