UNIVERSITY MUSEUM TO OBSERVE NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH IN NOVEMBER

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Nov. 1, 2002 - During the month of November, the Southeast Missouri State University Museum will observe Native American Heritage Month with exhibits and lectures in Memorial Hall and the University Center.

Paul White Eagle, Chief of the AhNiYvWiYa Tribe of Native Americans, will coordinate a display in Memorial Hall throughout November. The display will be on view in the University Museum's display cases in the front lobby of Memorial Hall. Memorial Hall is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. - midnight, and Saturday and Sunday, noon to midnight.

On Nov. 13, Native Americans will display artifacts, clothing, art works and crafts from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the University Center lobby. Native Americans planning to participate Nov. 13 include Walt and Josephine Keller, Glenda Seabaugh, Dave Davis, Johnny Mott, Steven Colbert and Paul White Eagle. They will display items from various tribes including the AhNiYvWiYa and Cherokee. In addition, there will be demonstrations on flintknapping, flute music and the use of the blow gun. Questions about native life and people will be welcomed.

On Nov. 14, the University Museum galleries in Memorial Hall will host a lecture at 7 p.m. by White Eagle. White Eagle will speak on "Past and Present: Native Americans in Southeast Missouri." His lecture will cover native and non-native approaches to spirituality and concepts of the modern world with a focus on rituals, ceremonies and sacred items. White Eagle also will discuss federal and non-federal tribes and their status within today's communities. An interactive discussion will follow the lecture.
