FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SOUTHEAST TO OBSERVE NATIONAL ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 11, 2002 – Southeast Missouri State University will observe National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW) Oct. 21-25 with several events designed to reinforce responsible attitudes about drinking and respect for the law.

Nationally, NCAAW started in 1983 with 25 schools and has now grown to more than 3,000 college campuses across the country. The program helps college administrators and students launch and strengthen year-round prevention efforts. At Southeast, many campus departments are pulling together to support students’ efforts in bringing the message to their peers. Through education, they hope to empower students to make wise choices and take responsibility for their own decisions and environment, University officials say.

Alcohol Awareness Week events are being sponsored by the Campus and Community Coalition for Change (CCCC).

On Monday, Oct. 21, butcher paper for the weeklong alcohol awareness writing campaign will be posted at the Towers Cafeteria/ Lounge, the third floor lobby in the University Center, Kent Library and the Student Recreation Center. Students, faculty and staff can write their thoughts and feelings throughout the NCAAW week, answering the question: “What impact has alcohol had on your life?” They also will be asked to remember anyone they love who has been killed or injured as a result of alcohol.

On Thursday, Oct. 24, and Friday, Oct. 25, the Peer Education Association and the Department of Public Safety will visit pre-selected classrooms for a simulated drunk driving arrest. Students will be given a sheet with information about drunk driving statistics and a coupon for a free “Cheers” T-shirt they can receive at the Center for Health and Counseling.

Student Activities Council, the CCCC and Chartwells will sponsor a “mocktail” competition on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the third floor lobby of the University Center from 7-9 p.m. Student organizations are required to reserve a space for the competition, and cash prizes will be awarded. This event will precede Student Activities Council’s Comedy Night in the University Center Club at 8 p.m.

Gamma and the CCCC will co-sponsor Bingo Night at the University Center Skylight Terrace from 9 to 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24. The program will include several prizes and provide alcohol awareness educational information.
