NEW FACULTY MEMBERS ATTENDING WORKSHOP TO GET ACQUAINTED WITH SOUTHEAST, REGION

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., July 26, 2002 - Thirty-four new faculty members at Southeast Missouri State University will participate in a five-day workshop Aug. 5-9 designed to acquaint them with the University and the Southeast Missouri region.

The Teaching Enhancement Workshop will be held in the University Center Missouriana Room. New faculty will have the opportunity to meet and work with each other, get oriented to the University and the region, and explore and discuss teaching and learning issues relevant to Southeast and its teacher-scholar model.

As part of the workshop, new faculty members will take a narrated bus tour of the University and the Southeast Missouri region. Dr. Frank Nickell, director of the Center for Regional History, and Dr. Dennis Holt, vice provost and executive director of the Southeast Missouri Educational Consortium, will lead the tour. During the tour, the two will provide information about the region's history and importance of Southeast's extended learning programs, especially at the Harry L. Crisp Bootheel Education Center in Malden, Mo., and the Sikeston Area Higher Education Center. The tour will pass through Dutchtown, Delta, Bell City, Bloomfield, Dexter, Bernie, Malden, Risco, Howardville, New Madrid, Sikeston and Scott City, and will give the participants a flavor for the region from which many of their students come.

In addition to the bus tour, faculty will participate in seminars on teaching strategies; student-centered teaching; integration of information technology with learning; learning styles and assessment; mentoring; Kent Library; and Student Development.

Southeast's teaching enhancement workshop was launched in 1986 for all newly hired faculty. Past participants have said the workshop is a good opportunity to share with their colleagues insights about teaching and learning, and is a rich, rewarding experience, as well as an opportunity to develop close, lasting relationships with other new faculty members.
