Presentation
Robert Hamblin, Department of English, led a discussion of Pat Conroy's new novel, South of Broad, for the Great Books group at the Cape Girardeau Public Library on Nov. 18.
Leon Book, Director of Student Transitions and First-Year Experience, co-presented a juried half-day workshop entitled “Permeating Career Development into the Undergraduate Student Experience: Connecting Theory and Practice,” at the 16th National Conference on Students in Transition (SIT), Salt Lake City, Utah, Nov. 6, with colleague Paul Gore, Associate Professor & Training Director: Counseling/Counseling Psychology, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. They briefly reviewed career development theory to establish a baseline for subsequent activities and discussions, then demonstrated how institutions can connect theory and practice in order to infuse career development into students’ undergraduate experiences to facilitate successful transitions into, through, and out of academic programs. They provided models of successful programs, including one institution’s efforts to connect the first-year seminar, career development, and liberal education so that students receive developmental career practice throughout their undergraduate experience. Workshop participants compared their institutional policies and practices against concepts and models presented to take away myriad ideas for consideration at their own institutions.
Bonnie Stepenoff, Department of History, served as a panelist in a roundtable discussion on "Mining Women: Gender in the Development of a Global Industry" at a conference on Agency and Action: the 34th Annual Meeting of the Social Science History Association in Long Beach, Calif., on Nov. 12.
