Presentation

Robert Hamblin, Department of English, presented a series of lectures and workshops in Taiwan May 10-14. At Feng Chia University in Taichung, he delivered the keynote address at a literary symposium and conducted two teaching literature workshops, and in Taipei, he presented Faulkner papers at National Taiwan University and to the Humanities Division of the National Science Council. He also read a selection of his poems at National Taiwan University.


Several faculty from Southeast Missouri State University participated in the annual meeting of the Missouri Academy of Science (MAS) April 19 at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Mo. From the Department of Physics & Engineering Physics, Christine Aide presented “Newly Developing Sinkhole Field in an Urban Setting” in the Geology/Geophysics Section; Gary Cwick chaired the MAS Senior Division Geography Section; and John Tansil presented “Non-Unique Solutions for Two Parallel Resistive Loads in DC Electric Circuits” in the Physics Section; David Naugler, Department of Computer Science, participated in the meeting by presenting “Erlang as an Introduction to Concurrent Programming” in the Computer Science Section; Michael Aide, Department of Agriculture, participated in the meeting by presenting “Ultisol Genesis on Colluvial Materials in the St. Francois Mountains in Missouri” and by chairing the MAS Senior Division Agriculture Section.


Professional Activity

Fred Jones and Jim Dufek, Department of Communication, were presented the Award of Excellence in video production at the Broadcast Educators Association annual conference in Las Vegas on April 18. The "Festival of Media Arts" is the faculty video competition for the Broadcast Educators Association. The award was presented for the video production "Missouri's Oldest Town" produced for the city of Ste. Genevieve, Mo. Fred Jones was also awarded "best short screenplay" for the screenwriting category.


Publication

A Concise History of Modern Dance, the fifth book by Marc Strauss, Department of Theatre and Dance, with secondary author Myron Nadel, has been accepted for publication in spring 2010 by Princeton Book Company, the leading publisher of dance texts and videos for more than 30 years.


Big Spring Autumn: A Journal, a book by Bonnie Stepenoff, Department of History, has been accepted for publicaton in 2009 by Truman State University Press. This book discusses historic preservation and the natural landscape.


“The Passion of the Snuff: How the MPAA Allowed a Horror Film to Irreparably Scar Countless Young Minds in the Name of Religion,” an article by Michael Gurnow, Department of English, appears in the April edition of American Atheist.


A paper, "Separating H-sets by Open Sets," written jointly by Mohan Tikoo and professor Jack Porter of the University of Kansas, was accepted for publication in the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin on April 14.
