For Antiphonal Brass, Drums, and Wind Ensemble—1994 Audio Sample mp3: 536 k Nova Materwas written for the Southeast Wind Ensemble and was given its official premiere at the Missouri Music Educators Association state convention at Lake of the Ozarks in 1994. The piece is based on the Southeast Missouri State University school song, i.e. its Alma Mater. Each section of the piece develops a different phrase of the song. While the piece is essentially minimalist, the phrases are often worked into elaborate canons. Separate snare drum and cornet parts are written to be played behind the audience giving a sort of "surround sound" effect. The piece was reworked and performed at the inauguration of Southeast President Dale Nietsche. It was further reworked in 2004 and forms the final movement of Anthems: A Sonata for Solo Piano.
