Flute and Guitar—2000

Audio sample, Movement 1: mp3

In the summer of 2000, I visited Linda Wetherill in New York to discuss her upcoming performance of my bass flute piece Hymntunes IV. An unforeseen consequence of the trip was my meeting Linda’s future husband, David Smith. David is a terrific tenor who, in addition to being a solo singer, has worked for years as a church musician. He showed me a series of hymns that he had composed. The melodies were very beautiful and were the kind of thing I was looking for to use in Hymntunes VI. David graciously granted me permission to use the melodies. The present work is the result.

Leslie Marrs and Robert Trent performed this work on their CD: Music for Flutes and Guitar (available through CDbaby).
