Coursework Leading to Certification as Teacher of the Visually Impaired: 
The Envision Program

This coursework leading to an endorsement in Visual Impairment is offered by Southwest Missouri State University (SMSU). If your school district serves a student who is visually impaired, you may want to participate in this program.

It may:

  • Lead to certification in Visual Impairment and Blindness.

  • Provide a teacher with the knowledge and skills to   effectively plan and implement an educational program for students with a visual impairment. 

  • Lead to proficiency in Braille for literature and mathematics.

 
Coursework Offered


Low Vision (Offered Fall 2004 On-Line)
Designed to provide teachers with the techniques to assess the impact of the vision loss on educational performance.  Introduction to optics, use of optical and non-optical devices in the learning environment will be stressed.

Orientation & Mobility
Practical application of orientation and mobility techniques will be examined.  Demonstration of cane techniques will be part of the course.

Anatomy & Function of the Eye (Offered Summer 2004 On-Line)
Designed to provide teachers with understanding of development of the human visual system, and basic terminology related to the structure and function of the eye as well as the diseases and disorders of the visual system. 

Braille Reading and Writing I (Offered Fall 2004 On-Line)
Designed to provide the teacher with skills to read and write the English Braille Code. Methods for teaching Braille and use of communication devices will be discussed.

Braille Reading and Writing II (Offered Spring 2005 On-Line)
Designed to provide the teacher with the skills to read and write using the Nemeth Code for mathematics.  Methods for teaching Nemeth Code and adaptations used for math and science will be discussed. 

Methods of Teaching Students with a Visual Impairment  (Offered Spring 2005 On-Line)
Designed to provide teachers with the techniques used to adapt classroom materials for all subject areas including the expanded core curriculum for students with VI.  Assessment procedures and planning an educational program will be stressed.

 
This is an add-on endorsement which may lead to certification in Visual Impairment.  A transcript analysis prior to enrollment is beneficial and required to be eligible for tuition reimbursement of courses.
