LEA
Information The Expanded Core
Curriculum The core curricular
areas taught in most schools, including language arts, mathematics, social
studies, science, arts and physical education do not meet the complete
academic needs of the student who is visually impaired. As a result
an Expanded Core Curriculum is suggested.
The Expanded Core
Curriculum includes:
-
Compensatory academic skills: This
includes Braille instruction, use of optical devices, or taped materials.
-
Orientation and Mobility: This
subject area includes instruction in independent travel skills.
-
Social Interaction Skills: This
subject is included since students need to be taught social skills which
most individuals learn by observation.
-
Independent Living Skills: Skills related to daily living are taught since the student with a vision
loss will not learn these skills through incidental learning.
-
Recreation and Leisure Skills:
These skills are taught since the student with a vision loss will not
learn them through incidental learning.
-
Career Education Skills:
Unemployment is a critical issue for individuals with a visual impairment.
Skill instruction is areas related to employment may increase the
individual's ability to find and retain employment.
-
Technology: The use of technology
provides the individual access to print. This is a key factor in the
successful employment of individuals with a visual impairment.
-
Visual Efficiency Skills:
Instruction in this area provides the student with information about how
to use their residual vision more efficiently.
